El Arte y La Vida

Creative Art Program for Foster Children

El Arte y La Vida is about using Art to meet a social responsibility, the responsibility to raise awareness of social dilemmas in our community and taking action.

Children under the Conservatorship of the state of Texas suffer various traumas resulting from abuse and or neglect.  Their ability to trust and express themselves has been stunted by the experiences that lead them into Foster care. El Arte y La Vida is an idea that would like to give Foster Children the opportunity to experience Art as a form of expression.

El Arte y La Vida is a creative art program that will offer classes to educate and empower Foster children in order to develop a creative outlet which will teach them how creativity can be a form of communication.

The children will be given their own sketchbook and drawing pencils to keep.  Basic drawing skills and activities will help the children improve their skills. Children in care rarely have personal belongings or pictures to take with them upon removal and things are easily lost from placement to placement; this will give them a token or reminder that they have a voice, a memory, a life that is important.

A major part of the program is to create 6 large collaborative works.  This will give the children the experience of working together to accomplish a bigger goal which they can be proud of.  The works will be displayed in public forums and will exist and experienced by the community of San Antonio.

El Arte y La Vida will be documenting the process via photographs in order to provide a visual story for the community that will be displayed along with the works created.  Educational material regarding Child Abuse Awareness will also be available.  Each child will receive a photograph from their participation in the program to keep.

The goal of El Arte y La Vida Creative Art Program for Foster Children is to provide 50 Foster children with Art classes, learn some basic skills and contribute to 6 large scale paintings that will be exhibited publicly in various locations in order to inspire residents to acknowledge the reality of child abuse and inspire action.
